The basic concept of the 1-2-3 program is extemely simple.  Today’s parents find themselves reasoning with children, trying to shape their behaviour.  Dr. Phalan introduces a revolutionary approach that emphasizes actions, consequences, and minimum communication to be offered only when appropriate.  In a nutshell, he introduces a “three strikes, and you’re out” approach.  After 3 strikes, the child goes into a time out area.  Don’t worry if you have doubts; Dr. Phelan also covers various situations, such as when the child refuses to go to time out.

The time-out length is to be determined by the age of the child--roughly 1 minute per age of the child.  The place of time-out can be the child’s room, but it needn’t be.  In fact, if being sent to the room does not come across as a punishment to the child, a better place might be a large laundry room, an office, or some other area of the house that offers no entertainment.

Additionally, Dr. Phalan’s program emphases the technique of minimizing talking--no lectures after the punishment is over. 

Most importanly, Dr. Phalan covers all the various situations that could occur while trying to enforce the 1-2-3 program, and how to deal with those situations.  For exmaple, what if while timing the child out, the child messes up his or her room?  What if the child refuses to go to time out?
